In a method of brick moulding, a slug of clay 10 of a length and width slightly smaller than the finished brick is placed in a mould 11 and spaced from its side walls and is then subjected to an impact force by a die 16 having a convex face which contacts that part of the slug extending above the mould top whereby the slug is expanded against the side walls. Moulds are fed in turn below the die having been previously loaded with a clay slug, and the die may be dropped from an adjustable height and/or it may be acted upon by adjustable spring means, or by a piston and cylinder assembly. The lower surface of the die may be of rubber. A tap 18 may carry more than one die enabling multiple lines of moulds to be used.
