The anionic water-soluble hydrophilic polymer or salt thereof may be polyacrylic, polymethacrylic or polyitoconic acid, sodium polyacrylate, carboxymethyl cellulose, casein, an alginate, or poly(methacrylamide). The watersoluble metal salt may be alum, K 2 SO 4 , or MgSO 4 . Specified monomers copolymerisable with the C 1-8 alkyl acrylate include styrene, α-methyl styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, methyl ethacrylate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, t-butyl acrylamide, octyl acrylamide, diacetone acrylamide, N-methylol acrylamide, N-methylol methacrylamide, N-ethoxy and N-butoxy methacrylamides, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and itaconic acid.
