A lubricant comprises a mineral oil, lanolin, glycerine and a stable solution of a basic compound prepared by reacting (1) an alkaline earth metal oxide, (2) an oil soluble organic acid or an alkaline earth metal salt thereof, (3) a neutral or basic alkaline earth metal sulphonate and (4) a phenol or an alkaline earth metal salt thereof. Organic acids specified are C 10 -C 30 carboxylic acids e.g. oleic acid. The phenol may be a C 9 -C 20 alkyl-phenol, a phenol sulphide or a phenolic phenothiazine (examples are given). The oil may also contain a surfactant e.g. a condensation product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol.
