[Also in Division A5] Novel (4 - phenoxy - 3,5 - dihalophenyl) alkanoamides or benzamides of the formula wherein R, R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl, R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, halogen or C 1-4 alkyl, X and Y are halogen, n is 0 to 3, and Am is amino, C 1-4 alkylamino, di-C 1-4 alkylamino, or a pyrrolidino, piperidino, hexa-, hepta-, or octamethylenimino, 4-C 1-4 alkylpiperazino radical, each of said heterocyclic radicals having attached as substituents on carbon atoms thereof 0 to 3 C 1-4 alkyl groups, a nitrogen atom of said heterocyclic moieties being the point of attachment of Am to the carbonyl are prepared by reacting the appropriate (4-phenoxy-3,5-dihalophenyl) alkanoate in which the alkyl radical of the ester group contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms with the corresponding basic nitrogenous compound Am-H.
