The heat flux is measured by similar thermocouples repeated at intervals along the container of an alpha-emitting material. Each thermopile consists of a support and a filament in which the indicated ratio of the thermal conduction to the electrical resistance is adjusted by a resistance. The container can be of any size. Pref. there are at least five thermocouple hot junctions per sq. cm. of external surface of the container. The thermocouples are pref. card supports with the good conductor (e.g. Cu) deposited electrolytically onto the poor conductor (e.g. Constantan).
