The vat of an electrolytic furnace for producing aluminium is provided with an incoherent powdery or granular layer 10 of silicon carbide, interposed between layers of other refractory materials. The inner layer 11 may be of a refractory formed of silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide, and the layer 12 of rammed carbon or carbon blocks. A further refractory and/or thermal insulating layer 13 and an iron shelf 14 complete the structure. In a modification the particulate silicon carbide layer is disposed between an inner anthracitic carbon layer in the form of blocks or a rammed mass, and an outer layer of refractory clay bricks. A layer thickness of the silicon carbide of 1 mm. or greater, preferably 1 cm., is disclosed.
