In a method of lining the heads of ingot moulds or hot tops with slabs of heat-insulating and/or exothermic material at least part of the faces of the slabs which is to contact the inner walls of the mould or hot top is coated with a layer of heat-settable adhesive resin, the coated slabs being located in their required positions whereat heat is supplied to melt the resin so that it will bond to the wall of the ingot mould and set to hold the slabs in position. Particularly suitable resins include phenol-formaldehyde and epoxy resins. The resin may be applied to the slab in the form of a dispersion in a pressure sensitive adhesive such as one based on polyisobutylene or it may be applied in the form of a dispersion in a viscous liquid medium such as a natural gum solution.
