1,191,197. Washing machines. HOLZERPATENT A.G. 26 June, 1968 [12 July, 1967], No. 30520/68. Heading DIA. [Also in Division G3j A programme control system for current consuming units, e.g. those of an automatic washing machine comprises separate programme switches, e.g. switches 7, 8, 9 independently controlling the units such as washing and spinning motors 13, 14 and a door releasing electromagnet 15, the switches being actuated by a programme control member, e.g. a control drum driven stepwise by a timing motor 3 energized via switches 5, controlled by a timing device providing stepping pulses, and a switch, e.g. a silicon controlled rectifier 62 (Fig. 2, not shown) in series with the programme switches and controlled by the stepping pulses of the timing device and by a delay device with a delay time. not much greater than the duration of a single stepping pulse and adapted to de-energize said units whilst two or more stepping pulses are applied in uninterrupted sequence to the programme control member. In the illustrated embodiment the silicon controlled rectifier (62) is comprised in a control circuit 6 which also includes as the delay device a capacitor in parallel with a resistor. When the switches 5 are open the capacitor is charged via a resistor 4 and a diode rectifier and applies voltage to the collector of a transistor which receives a pulse at its base when a switch 5 is closed and conducts to trigger the silicon controlled rectifier. Closure of a switch 5 for the duration of a stepping pulse, e.g. 0.7 seconds, short circuits the resistor 4 but the transistor is maintained conducting by the discharge of the capacitor for a slightly longer period, e.g. 1 second. Thus during normal operation of the system the capacitor is re-charged at the end of a stepping pulse, and the silicon controlled rectifier again rendered conducting when the next stepping pulse occurs after a programme interval. A switch 5 may, however, be manually operated to drive the timing motor 3 to actuate the switches 7, 8, 9 in a direct succession of steps. Then at the end of a period, e.g. of 1 second, during which 'the capacitor has discharged sufficiently to render the transistor and thereby the silicon controlled rectifier non-conducting, no voltage is applied via the terminal 61 to the switches 7, 8, 9.
