Dicarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting at least one unsaturated fatty acid of formula FORM:1115156/C2/1 where x + y + z = 5 to 19 and a + b = 1 to 3 and either a or b may be 0 with carbon monoxide in the presence of at least 15 moles hydrogen fluoride per mole of unsaturated fatty acid, a molar equivalent, based on the unsaturated acid, of water may be present. Acids listed are 10-undecenoic, lauroleic, myristoleic, palmitoleic, oleic, gadoleic, erucic, linoleic, linolenic, eleostearic, licanic, acachidonic and clupanodonic acids and examples describe the preparation of carboxystearic from commercial oleic acid; of carboxy-undecanoic acid from 10-undecenoic acid; and carboxybehenic acid from erucic acid.
