[Also in Division D1] A soft, drapeable, heat-insulating material comprises sheet polyurethane foam 10 of a thickness of the order of 1/16 of an inch having permanently bonded to one face thereof a tough, strong, fibrous open-mesh reinforcing fabric 11 of so open a texture as to have at least 75% of voids per unit of area, and having upstanding flock fibres F adhesively bonded to the other face of the foam ply, said flock fibres collectively constituting a layer which substantially conceals the foam ply, said layer being of substantially the same density at all points transversely of the width of the material, the flock fibres being of such a length that they impart to the material the appearance- and feel of conventional nap such as is produced in the napping of woven blanket cloth. The material is made by assembling and bonding polyurethane foam and the fabric, coating the exposed surface of the foam with a thermosetting adhesive A, advancing the lamellar substrate through a flock-applying zone wherein upon the adhesive coating cf-each of a series of areas of the advancing substrate flock fibres are dropped and in falling pass through an electrostatic field such as to cause the fibres to become predominantly parallel and perpendicular, said areas being of like size and each extending transversely of the substrate from one longitudinal edge to the other of the latter, said areas adjoining one another longitudinally of the advancing substrate without intermission, characterised in so depositing. flock fibres upon each successive area so as to distribute each such deposit over substantially the entire area, each such deposit consisting of a like fractional portion of the total amount of fibre requisite to provide said area with a layer of the required density, curing the adhesive and chemically softening the material. In a preferred embodiment, the fabric is bonded between two layers of polyurethane foam and the outer surface of each layer coated with the flock. The adhesive may be coloured or may be applied over a decorative pattern. The reinforcing fabric may be woven e.g. ootton scrim or a bonded fabric. Specified flock fibres are silk, nylon, polyamide, polyester or acrylic fibres. Specified adhesives are acrylic polymers.
