[Also in Division C3] Chlorinated polyhydroxy polyethers are obtained by reacting 4,4,4-trichloro-1,2-epoxybutane with carbohydrate based materials (i.e. carbohydrates and oxyalkylated carbohydrates) in the presence of acid catalysts at 30‹ to 200‹ C. Specified carbohydrate based materials are sucrose, the reaction product of sucrose with water and oxyalkylated derivatives thereof, the reaction product of sucrose with polyhydric alcohols and oxyalkylated derivatives thereof, other sugars, starch degradation products and starch and its derivatives (see Division C3). The 4,4,4-trichloro-1,2-epoxybutane may be used as a blend with a halogen-free epoxide.
