A method of inhibiting the chilling of a cast iron article and promoting ferritization of the matrix comprises adding to molten cast iron having a carbon content of 2À0-5À0% by weight, 0À2-7À0% by weight of a component selected from chlorine gas and at least one chloride, and 0À1-6À0% by weight of a component selected from fluorides, alloys and metals containing alkaline earth or rare earth metals, the additions being made so that both components are present in the molten iron at the same time.
