The spare wheel is mounted between the chassis and the load carrying body which must first be tipped sideways at a slight angle before the wheel can be removed or replaced. In order to lift the spare wheel and swing it clear of the vehicle and lower it to the ground, a lifting system is provided consisting of an extendable lifting arm cranked at an angle of 90 deg. and pivoted by a swivel pin mounted on a chassis member. The wheel is then lifted or lowered by a cradle and a manually operated rope provided with a safety ratchet attached to the lifting arm.
