Equipment for starting-up and operating large scale chemical plant, particularly for the production of process gas for ammonia or methanol synthesis, having a combustion chamber with adjoinint heat exchanger space. The latter is characterised by being divided into a number of parallel flows paths, each containing heat exchangers for different media, and opening into the combustion chamber, at least one path being provided with a regulating closure device at the top and a radiation screen - tube bank - at the bottom.
