1323686 Welding by fusion; jointing DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 28 Oct 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 57807/69 Headings B3R and B3V [Also in Division F2] A method of securing an annular member on or within a hollow shaft in forced abutment with a stop on the shaft comprises applying to the annular member when mounted on the shaft a force directed towards the stop, directing a beam of heat energy radially firstly through the shaft wall and then through the annular member to weld them together, the heating effect being greater in the material of the shaft so that upon cooling a residual shrinkage stress is created which presses the end face of the annular member against the stop. The method may be applied to electron beam welding a retaining collar 19 on a shaft 13 to hold the inner track 11 of a roller bearing 12 against a step 14 on the shaft, a load 22 being applied to the collar during welding. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a bearing is secured internally of the hollow shaft. The method may also be applied to securing a disc or gear to a shaft.
