Removal of alkalis from cement furnace flue gases in a by pass arm attached to the main powder feed into the rotary tube furnace. The alkali vapours are made to condensed on vertically suspended stainless steel tubes open at the bottom end, there being a special outlet arm attached to the bypass. Cold gas is passed through the tube which are suspended by a weight sensitive lever arrangement, which acturates a microswitch changing the flow of gas through the pipes to a water flow, causing their thermal contraction and consequent loosening of the alkali scale condensed on the tubeS, which drops off. Opt. a vibratory action can be superimposed on this.
