Apparatus for transferring irradiated samples from a swimming pool reactor to a laboratory comprises a shielding hood 10 partly immersed in the pool 14. The sample 54 to be transferred is initially placed by tongs, not shown, in a receptacle 32 and a transfer tube 66 is then moved from the Fig. 1 position, in which it is situated above a pneumatic conveyer tube 12 leading to the laboratory, to the Fig. 4 position in which it is situated above the receptacle 32. The tube 66 is moved by rotating a threaded rod 78 engaging a bush 76 connected by a bracket to the tube, the rod being situated within a stationary tube 50 supporting an actuator 82 for rotating the rod. A rabbit 36 accommodated in a compartment 26 of a magazine 24 is now released by an actuator 38 and falls by gravity through a sleeve 28 into the tube 66. This operation of the actuator 38 also causes a rotary movement of the sleeve 28 so that it is moved from a position displaced from the tube 66 into a position in alignment therewith. An actuator 58 with a rod 56 now raises the sample 54 into the rabbit 36 in which it is locked by means not shown. The tube 66 with the rabbit 36 locked therein is raised and rotated to be returned to the Fig. 1 position; here, the lock 68 is withdrawn and the rabbit drops into the tube 12. Interlocks are provided to prevent incorrect operation.
