A method and apparatus for setting up a temperature gradient across a hollow member which is a good conductor of heat such as uranium carbide testpiece of simulate the thermal conditions of fuel inside a nuclear reactor. A uranium carbide hollow member has a high frequency AC heating means inside it and a cooling jacket surrounding it to provide a temperature gradient of approximately 450 DEG C.
