Degradable packaging and film materials are prepared from polyethylene (I) that has been modified by the incorporation of a small amount of carbon monoxide (II). The copolymers contain preferably 0.2 to 5% wt. of (II). They are prepared from high-pressure polyethylene at temperatures of 150 deg.C. and at pressure of 1000 kg./cm2. using free radical producing catalysts. The copolymers are rapidly degraded by sunlight and UV light.
