A forked loop forming element is synchronised to move in co-operation with the sweing needle, and a programmed control device is operative to stop the loop forming element and needle in a predetermined position and actuated a pref. ram drive cutter to cut the yarn extending between the arms of the loop forming element. Manual cutting of the yarn is eliminated.
