Water-soluble polyester coating compositions having improved wetting, film and application properties.. Comprises 20-80% wt. (pref. 30-70% wt.) branched polyester (I), containing alpha, beta- olefinically unsat. and hindered dihydroxy-carboxylic acid residues and 80-10% wt. (pref. 65-30% wt.) polyester (II) having pendant beta, gamma olefinically unsat. ether groups. Optionally composition may include 0.20% wt. beta-gamma olefinically unsat. ether of polyhydric alcohol (III) (containing at least 2 ether groups). Components (I) and (II) are the reaction products of defined amounts of reactants. The properties of both the compositions and the resulting coatings show improvements over prior art (GB 887, 394, 974, 892, 995, 271 and 1,007,834) water soluble materials.
