Apparatus for punching holes in a recording medium, such as punch tape, has a plurality of punches each selectively operable by its own control means, each control means including an elongate rail 5 governed by two actuating members, the first of which is a driving member, which continuously imparts to the rail a to and fro motion transverse to its length, and the second of which is a stop number, which selectively arrests this motion at one point, the stop member being selectively controlled of electromagnetic means. The drive is common to all punches. As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a rail 5 which is continuously oscillated by means of an eccentric 101 rotatable on a driving shaft 11 and is supported at one end by leaf springs 13, 14. The apparatus also comprises a stop lever 15 rockable about a pivot 16 acted on by a spring 18. The lever 15 has arms 15a, 15c, the arm 15a having a projection 15b while the other arm 15c has a ledge 15e engaging the rail 5. In idling operation, the rail 5 swings freely and no punching occurs. If however, the electromagnet 19 is energized, the lever 15 is arrested and the projection 15b fixes the end of the rail 5 so that the rail swings and the tape 1 is punched. In another arrangement, the eccentric is replaced by an eccentric pin on a rotatable disc entering a slot in the arm, Fig. 2 (not shown) or the arm is spring-influenced against a cam, Fig. 3 (not shown). In another modification, the apparatus comprises a connecting rod 23, Fig. 4, connected to a crank on a driving shaft 11, the rod being coupled by a resilient joint 22 to an actuating lever 104 provided with cross bars 8, 9 between which the rail 5 passes and provided with elements 20, 21 engageable with one arm 15d of the stop member 15. Arm 15a of the stop member is acted on by a tension spring 18. In a still further arrangement, one end of the rail 5, Fig. 7, is provided with a slot 30 for receiving the head 15b of the stop lever 15 in the non-working state of the rail. Also in this arrangement the actuating rod 107 has cross bars 8, 9 between which the rail passes and elements 20, 21 for arm 15d of the stop lever.
