[Also in Division D1] Binders for non-woven fabrics comprise an aqueous copolymer dispersion prepared by conventional methods wherein the copolymer contains at least 56% by weight of units of one or more esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, 2-10% by weight of units of N-methylolacrylamide and/or N-methylolmethacrylamide, 0À1-5% by weight of units of a polyallyl or polymethallyl ester of an aromatic polybasic carboxylic acid, and 0-30% by weight of units of one or more other comonomers. The (meth)- acrylate esters are preferably those of C 1 -C 8 alkanols, and the acid component of the poly- (meth)allyl esters may be phthalic, terephthalic, trimeric, trimellitic, pyromellitic or diphenic acid. Suitable optional comonomers include acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic and methacrylic acid and their salts and amides, styrene, vinyl ethers, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. The copolymer dispersions may be prepared in the presence of an emulsifier, e.g. an ethoxylated fatty alcohol which may be sulphonated, a fatty alcohol, a sulphonation product of a hydrocarbon or an alkylarylsulphonate. In the examples ammonium oxalate is included in the copolymer dispersions.
