A shaped article comprising a plurality of sections such as a car or cockpit carpet is made from a piled fabric incorporating a layer of thermoplastic or thermosetting plastics material by applying mechanical pressure to the fabric only at the regions at the joins between the sections of the article. In this way flattening of the pile over the whole area of the article is prevented. In one embodiment, the fabric, which may be preheated, is formed between a female press part 9 and a counterbalanced male part 8 pivoted to the frame 1 carrying the female press part. Press part 8 consists of a framework of bars, three of which 17, 18 and 19 are shown in the Figure. The bars may be internally heated or cooled by fluid entering through hollow spindles 5 by which the press parts is mounted. In a second embodiment, not shown, the press part 9 is perforated so that suction may be applied to the whole of the undersurface of the fabric, in addition to the localized pressure applied by the bars. The fabric may be in a single piece or in a plurality of pieces, the joins between the pieces coinciding with the lines of application of the bars.
