[Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of the Formula (I) wherein each R 1 which may be the same or different represents an alkyl C 1-4 or hydroxyalkyl C 1-4 group or a group of the formula wherein R 2 represents an alkyl C 1-4 group, R 3 represents a tertiary alkyl group, n is 0 or 1 and X represents a halogen atom or a nitro or alkyl C 1-4 group, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in the two R 1 groups is at least 4 and then when both R 1 groups are C 1-4 alkyl groups, n is 1 and is a nitro group. They are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding N,N-disubstituted aniline with hydrogen peroxide. Specified compounds include o - nitro - N,N - diethylaniline - N - oxide, 2,2SP1/SP- (phenylamino) - diethanol - N - oxide, N- methyl - N - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - t - butyl - 5 - methylbenzyl) - aniline - N - oxide and N- ethyl - N - (2 - hydroxy - 5 - t - amylbenzyl)- aniline-N-oxide. N - methyl - N - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - t - butyl- 5-methylbenzyl)-aniline is prepared from N,N- dimethyl - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - t - butyl - 5 - methylbenzyl) - dithiocarbamate and phenylmethylamine. N - ethyl - N - (2 - hydroxy - 5 - t - amylbenzyl)- aniline is prepared .by reacting phenylethylamine with N,N-dimethyl-(2-hydroxy-5-t-amylbenzyl)-dithiocarbamate. The compounds of Formula (I) inhibit the formation of popcorn polymer.
