A PROCESS FOR THE MODIFICATION OF THE COMPOSITION OF NATURAL GASES AND LIKE GASES

The composition of a natural .gas, or of a substitute natural gas, containing hydrocarbons heavier than CH 4 , is modified by catalytically reforming a stream of the gas mixed with steam or H 2 to reduce the concentration of hydrocarbons other than CH 4 , and mixing the product gas with another stream of the original gas. The process is adapted for making natural gases from different sources compatible with each other. Preferred reforming temperatures are in the range 250‹ to 400‹ C., and the pressure may exceed 70 atmos. A preferred catalyst is co-precipitated nickel-aluminja, optionally with alkaline or alkaline earth, metals. Residual steam should be removed from the product gas, and C0 2 may be removed before mixing with the original gas. A third stream of the original gas may be oxidized and then added 'either to the gas mixture going to the reformer, or to the unreformed stream.
