1,199,162. Treating textiles. VEPA A.G. 13 Sept., 1967 [18 Oct., 1966], No. 41702/67. Heading D1L. In a continuous process for finishing knitted fabrics and hosiery goods in a substantially tensionless state, the material passes a spreader 3 into a suction drum bath 4 for impregnating with treatment liquor from which it is fed to a steam chamber 7 wherein it is laid in folds on a steam permeable belt 10, the material is then unfolded and passed through three suction drum bowls 17 where it is washed and rinsed and finally to a drying chamber 18, the material being carried between each stage of the process in a flat tensionless state or lattice type belts. After impregnating in bath 4 the material may have part of the absorbed liquor removed by squeeze rolls 5 or a vacuum extraction means. The process may be a continuous desizing process with sodium bromide and a continuous bleaching process with peroxide without an intermediate drying process, and without a washing process after desizing. The desizing and bleaching liquid may be applied separately or simultaneously before steaming. If desired the bleaching may be replaced by dyeing, the desizing agent and dyestuffs being chosen not to interact with one another. The steamer 7 is provided with an ante-chamber 8 at sub-atmospheric pressure at the entrance and also a water seal 14 at the exit.
