1278110 Excavating trenches IMPRESA COSTRUZIONI OPERE SPECIALIZZATE SpA 14 Aug 1969 [31 May 1969] 40784/69 Heading E1F Apparatus for excavating trenches comprises a rotary head 11 mounted on a frame 1 having horizontal guides 3 slidably engaged by a carriage 5 for the head which rotates about a downwardly extending axis. The head 11 is carried by a rotatably driven shaft mounted in a slide 6 which is slidable horizontally relative to the carriage 5, the slide and the carriage having holes adapted to register with transverse holes in the frame 1 whereby the head can be moved along the length of the frame by selectively engaging pins in the holes so that the slide and the carriage can be moved alternately. Hydraulic jacks are provided for operating the pins, and the slide and the carriage are moved relative to each other by supplying fluid alternately to the ends of cylinders provided in the slide 6 which engage pistons on the carriage 5. The frame 1 is supported by pulleys 2 for vertical movement, and the shaft is pivoted in the slide 6 so that it can extend at 5‹ to either side of the vertical. A suction duct C is provided to remove cut material together with bentonite mud which is separated and returned to the trench. The head 11 may have cutters on its lower surface as well as on its periphery. Operation may be automatic.
