1344265 An anti-hypertensive extract from Anacardium occidentale h ALBERT ROLLAND SA 16 July 1972 [16 July 1970] 34608/70 Heading A5B An extract having antihypertensive properties is obtained by (a) subjecting the ground bark of Anacardium occidentale h. (cashew) to at least one extraction with petroleum ether, (b) after removing the petroleum ether, subjecting the insoluble residue which is left to at least one extraction with diethyl ether, (c) after removing the diethyl ether, subjecting the insoluble residue which remains to at least one extraction with ethanol, methanol, a mixture thereof, or a mixture of either or both with water, (d) after removing the insoluble residue and by concentrating the soluble fraction according to (c) in vacuo at a temperature below 60‹C, to produce a dry extract, dissolving the dry extract in water, and collecting the anti-hypertensive principle by precipitation with an alkaloid, e.g. caffeine or hide powder, each of the extractions according to (a), (b) and (c) being carried out for at least 3 hours in the absence of light and at a temperature of 0 to 15‹C. The solvent used in stage (c) may be a water-ethanol or water methanol mixture. The extract obtained may be further purified by precipitation from a methanol solution. The active material may be incorporated into therapeutic compositions, e.g. powders, tablets, dispersible granules, capsules, catchets and suppositories.
