1358991 Reduction catalyst IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Sept 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 52942/70 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A transition metal boride catalyst is obtained by the inter-action of a transition metal comnound with a boron-containing reducing agent. The operation is preferably caried out in the absence of air and in the presence of a solvent, e.g. water. The catalyst may be used directly or supported on a carrier. Suitable transition metal compounds include oxides, hydroxides, alkoxides, salts, complexes containing pi- or sigma-bonded ligands or alkyl groups attached to metal, and complexes of the metals in zero valent form with olefinic and other donors. A reduced cobalt borate catalyst is prepared by precipitating cobalt borate from aqueous solution, separating and drying the precipitate and reducing it under hydrogen at elevated temperature.
