The basic material is produced by very fine milling and homogenization of the clinker of barium aluminate of composition (wt. %) -SiO2:7, Al2O3:9-20; FE2O3:3-6; BaO - 68-85; CaO 3. MgO 2; alkali 1. A mixture of finely homogenized powdered barite or wither with ferruginous bauxite is first heated to calcining or melting temp. (1550-1700 degrees C) then cooled slowly, the resultant clinker being again fine milled and homogenized. For use in radioactivity shielding, additional barite is added at this stage in proportion of 1/5 to 1/2 of the whole. For refractory mortars, etc., it is omitted.
