1,103,091. Tobacco smoke filters. CIGARETTE COMPONENTS Ltd. 29 June, 1964 [27 June, 1963; 8 Oct., 1963; 4 Dec., 1963; 7 Feb., 1964], Nos. 25661/63, 39681/63, 47963/63 and 5356/64. Heading A2C. A method of manufacturing tobacco smoke filters comprises the steps of applying to separated zones on a continuously fed web, tow or yam an additional filtering material in particulate, liquid or suspended state, forming the web, tow or yarn into a rod-like body with the zones of additional material in axially separated sections and cutting the rod-like body transversely into filters. As shown in Fig. 1 paper from a roll 1 is led between an applicator roll 7 and presser roll 8. The roll 7 has surfaces 12 which contact a roller 9 rotating in a trough 11 filled with a slurry of carbon. The web is thereby transversely coated at intervals, passes under a heater 13 to a plug making device 3, and is cut into filters 5. If crepe paper is to be coated the roll 7 is replaced by a roller having raised circumferential portions so that the coating is applied parallel to the direction of feed of the web. The web is then cut transversely and formed into plugs having a longitudinal exit parallel to the transverse cuts (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). Instead of paper, filamentary material may be used to which a plasticiser e.g. triacetin or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is applied before closing with the additional material. The applicator may be in the form of a reciprocating nozzle 71 (Fig. 11). The additional material is fed through a connection 72 and connects between the body 70 and needle 83. The body 70 is reciprocated in a guide 75 by cams 79 on a shaft 80 and a cam 81 controls the needle 83. The arrangement is such that the needle 83 is lifted in relation to the body 70 at the time the application of material is to be made so that the additional material can flow through the nozzle 71. If the additional material is in solid form, e.g. activated carbon mixed with a fine resin, the roller 111 (Fig. 16) may be used. This roller rotates under the hopper filled with the additional material and has grooves 113 for receiving the material. The web contacts the roller 111 and the material is deposited thereon, the web being then heated to fuse the resin. The heating may be effected by injecting steam into the web whilst it is being formed into a rod. Instead of carbon, other additional materials such as liquid polyethylene glycol, sepiolite and fullers earth may be used.
