A surfactive material comprising the ester reaction product of at least one hydroxy equivalent of a, non-ionic surfactant containing at least one hydroxyl group, with not more than four carboxylic acid equivalents of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid material or the corresponding sulpho-acid material, the ester thereby obtained being converted to the corresponding sulphonate sa the said unsaturated polycarboxy-lic acid material being obtained by a process which comprises pyrolysing an alkaline earth citrate at a temperature of from 250 to 4000C for a period of time until an increase in titratable alkalinity of the reaction mixture is obtained, and converting the unsaturated salt material thereby obtained to the corresponding acid material.
