Methyl isobutyl ketone from acetone - and acetone and methyl isobutyl ketone from isopropanol,on supported catalysts

Methyl isobutyl ketone (I) is prepd. by condensation of acetone in presence of H2, at not 180 degrees C., on a catalyst which contains Pt and/or Rh, supported on a porous, non-acidic, oxidic carrier which has an average pore dia. of 150-250 angstroms and a specific surface of not 80 m2/g. The pref. carrier is alumina. The catalyst can also be used for the prepn. of acetone and (I) from isopropanol. The catalysts have high selectivity for (I) and prodn. of 6C ketones is reduced. High space-velocities can be used, so that small reactors are suitable.
