Appts. for the countercurrent contacting of two immiscible or only slightly miscible liquids of different density, consisting of a series of mixing chambers (Mn-1), (Mn), (Mn+1) and settling chambers (Bn-1), (Bn), (Bn+1), in which: (1) the mixing chambers are formed by a vertical column (I) sub-divided into compartments by horizontal plates extending over the whole cross-section, with only one hole in the centre for the passage of a common stirrer shaft with a stirrer unit in each compartment, whereby no mass transfer essential to the process takes place between adjacent compartments via the stirrer shaft hole; (2) the settlement chambers are placed outside the column (I), (Bn) on the feed side is connected to mixing chamber (Mn) and on the discharge side for the light phase is connected to the next higher mixing chamber (Mn+1) while on the discharge side for the heavy phase, it is connected to the next lower mixing chamber (Mn-1).
