1358296 Polymer compositions BAYER AG 6 July 1971 [10 July 1970] 31651/71 Headings C3P and C3G An anionic paper sizing agent comprises a 1 : 15 to 15 : 1 by weight mixture of: (a) a 5-50% aqueous solution of a reaction product of a copolymer containing 30-70% of olefinically unsaturated monomer units and 70-30% of units of maleic or itaconic acid derivatives of which 50-100% are imides having the formula and 0-50% are the dicarboxylic acid, the dicarboxylic acid half amide, or salts of these, with at least 0À4 moles per mole of imide group in the copolymer of ammonia, C 1 -C 24 aliphatic or C 5 -C 7 alicyclic amine or an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate, and (b) a 5-50% latex of a copolymer of olefinically unsaturated monomers. Exemplified olefinically unsaturated monomers for use in component (a) are isobutylene and styrene. These are preferably reacted with maleic anhydride or its methyl or isopropyl half ester in equimolar amounts to form an alternating structure and the resultant polymer is then reacted with ammonia to form the imide derivative. This product is then reacted with ammonia or triethanolamine. Latex (b) is prepared either by polymerizing butyl acrylate and acrylonitrile, optionally with styrene in the presence of solution (a) using ammonium persulphate as catalyst to give a graft copolymer or by polymerizing butyl acrylate and acrylonitrile optionally with styrene or ethylene and monocyclohexyl maleate or butadiene and acrylonitrile or styrene separately in aqueous emulsion and the resulting latex is then mixed with solution (a) to form a sizing solution. Starch or an optical brightener may be added to the solution which is applied either to paper or pulp.
