1380244 Thieno[3,2-b][f][4H]benzazepine ROUSSEL-UCLAF 1 March 1972 [1 March 1971] 57677/73 Divided out of 1380243 Heading C2C Novel thieno[3,2-b][f][4H]benzazepines of the general formula wherein each of RSP1/SP and RSP2/SP, which may be at any available position on the benzene nucleus, is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a trifluoromethyl, optionally substituted alkoxy, alkylthio, alkyl, optionally substituted sulphamoyl, dialkylamino or acylamino group; R 1 which may be at the 2- or 3-position, is a hydrogen atom or alkyl group; XSP2/SP is a hydrogen atom; YSP3/SP is a hydrogen atom or hydroxyl group; and ZSP3/SP is a hydrogen atom; or XSP2/SP and YSP3/SP together form an additional C-C bond between the atoms to which they are attached; or YSP3/SP and ZSP3/SP together form the oxygen atom of a ketonic function, are prepared (a) when YSP3/SP and ZSP3/SP together form the oxygen atom of a ketonic function, by acid hydrolysis of the corresponding compound in which each of YSP3/SP and ZSP3/SP is an alkoxy or alkylthio group or YSP3/SP and ZSP3/SP together form an alkylenedioxy, alkylenedithio or alkylenethiooxy group; (b) when YSP3/SP is a hydroxyl group, by reduction of the product of (a); (c) when XSP2/SP and YSP3/SP together form an additional C-C bond, by heating the product of (b) in the presence of a metal oxide; and (d) when YSP3/SP is a hydrogen atom, by treatment of the product of (a) with a powerful reducing agent.
