The invention relates to a process for the recovery of a quinone from a working solution comprising one or more suitable quinone compounds dissolved in a solvent system, the solvent system comprising a quinol-dissolving constituent and a quinone dissolving constituent and the working solution having a content of non- regenerable by-products as a result of the use of the working solution in a continuous process for the production of hydrogen peroxide comprising treating the working solution so as to convert the quinone compound therein into an ion exchangeable form, e.g. by hydrogenation, contacting the working solution, containing the ion exchangeable form of the quinone compound, with a macroreticular ion exchange resin having an ionic form which will allow ion exchange of the ion exchangeable form of the quinone compound on to the ion exchange resin, separating the ion exchange resin from the working solution and treating the ion exchange resin so as to recover quinone compound therefrom. Hydrogen peroxide may be prepared by subjecting the quinone compounds in a solvent system to a series of cycles of process steps each cycle including catalytic hydrogenation, which results in the formation of a quinol, oxidation which results in the formation of a quinone and hydrogen peroxide and aqueous extraction of a hydrogen peroxide.
