Compositions contng. elemental iodine and a surfactant R - A - X - (MH)a (I) where R =H or X-(MH)a A=straight chain hydrocarbyl group of 8-22C atoms NH, NR, PO4, SO3NH, SO3NR, SNH or SNR and a=1 or R=alkyl (1-4C) M=R' R" R' and R"=oxypropylene or oxyethylene and mixtures of these two, the total weight ratio of oxyethylene to oxypropylene in M being 1.3:1 to 15:1 and M constituting 55-80% by wt. of the total surfactant. Germicide and detergent of particular utility in cleaning and sanitizing food handling equipment. (I) is biodegradable i.e. at least 85% is degraded by effluent from an activated sewage sludge disposal plant within 7 days.
