Rotary regenerative heat exchange apparatus for exchanging heat and/or moisture between stale air leaving a room and fresh air supplied to the room comprises a housing 10 enclosing a rotor 32 having an annular matrix of transfer material surrounding a central hub 34. The transfer material, which may be layers of asbestos impregnated with a hygroscopic substance such as lithium chloride is formed with axially extending passageways. Spent air passes through the apparatus in a direction 24 and the fresh air flows countercurrently in a direction 86. An interspace 92 formed between the rotor matrix and a sector-shaped spoke 78 is bounded by strips 80, 82, 84 which form part of a sealing arrangement (see Fig. 5, not shown); any stale room air present in the axially extending matrix passageways is thus removed by purging same with a portion of the fresh air flow, said fresh air portion following a return path in the direction of arrows 88, 90. Around the outer edges of the rotor matrix and between the two gas flow paths are further sealing members (see Fig. 3, not shown). The annular matrix is constructed of sector-shaped portions 98 joined together by a suitable adhesive such as epoxy resin.
