Acid waste water is purified by addn. of CaCO3 and/or CaHCO3 and opt. CO2. The water is then, after addn. of milk of lime, subjected, in a reactor, to a rapid (conventional) decarbonisation process, followed by filtration using a gravel filter. Part of the water is channelled off before filtration, and passes via a cation exchanger to the waster water at the top of the reactor. Process and installation are economical to produce and maintain, and unwanted by - products are minimised.
