Alkali-soluble vinyl polymers with phenolic hydroxyl grps. contain repeat units of formulae (I), (II), (III) where R is H, alkoxy or amino; in (I), X = CO; and in (II), X = SO2. The polymers are obtained by reacting polyvinylalcohol with an aromatic carboxylic acid (e.g. salicylic acid), a sulphonic acid (e.g. hydrobenzene sulphonic acid), or an aldehyde with phenolic hydroxyl grp. (e.g. vanillin). The claimed compns. contain a photosensitive agent chosen from o-quinone-diazide cpds. Used in mfre. of printing plates having good resistance to abrasion and handling and peeling. Compns. may be stored in darkness for extended periods without deteriorating.
