Sodium or potassium cyanonickelate is prepared by reacting a nickel salt, the anion of which is capable of forming a corresponding sodium or potassium salt having a water solubility in excess of 25 grams per 100 grams of water at 25‹ C., with sodium or potassium cyanide, with a relative molar proportion of cyanide to nickel salt of about 4 : 1, in an amount of water sufficient to dissolve the reactants while permitting precipitation of the major portion of the formed alkali metal cyanonickelate upon cooling the reaction mixture to a temperature between room temperature and 5‹ C., and cooling the reaction mixture to precipitate the sodium or potassium cyanonickelate. Suitable nickel salts are the chloride, nitrate, acetate, bromide, iodide and sulphate, except that the use of nickel sulphate is excluded when the cyanide is potassium cyanide.
