1,155,572. Aqueous adhesive compositions. BRIDGESTONE TIRE K.K. 23 Aug., 1966 [28 Aug., 1965; 9 Aug., 1966], No. 37789/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] A water base composition for adhering synthetic fibres to rubber comprises 1 to 35% by weight of resorcinol formaldehyde resin, 5 to 90% by weight of a latex of a high polymer having epoxy groups and unsaturated chemical bonds, the molecular weight of which being more than 8000 and the epoxy equivalent weight of which being less than 3000, and less than 94% by weight of rubber latex, all percentages being solid weight per total solids, the mole ratio of resorcinol to formaledehyde in said resin being between 1 : 0À2 and 1 : 7 and the total solids content of the adhesive being 1 to 40% by weight. Suitable high polymers include butadiene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymers and butadiene-styrene-glycidyl methacrylate terpolymers. Suitable rubber latices include butadiene-styrene copolymer, butadiene-styrenemethacrylic acid terpolymer, butadiene-styrenevinyl pyridine terpolymer, and polychloroprene latices. The compositions may also contain lower molecular weight epoxy compounds such as epoxy resins and epoxy novolak resins. The compositions may also contain adhesion promoting additives such as dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate, benzyl benzoate, dibutyl maleate, dioctyl maleate, dioctyl sebacate, tricresyl phosphate, glycerol triacetate, diethylene glycol diacetate, biphenyl, benzophenone, and pentaerythritol tetrapropionate.
