[Also in Division B8] A machine for forming windings for use in dynamo-electric machines comprises a forming station having a first set of resilient fingers engageable with one end of a helically wound coil of conductive strip, the turns of which are insulated from one another, a second set of resilient fingers engageable with the other end of the coil, mounting means for said sets of fingers, and means for moving said sets of fingers relatively towards or away from one another to bend the coil to form a wave wound winding. The first pair of pivoted fingers 12 are spring-loaded apart at 16, their spacing 1 being adjustable by an hydraulically operated slidable sizing sleeve 22. The second pair of pivoted spring-loaded fingers 15 are mounted on a vertically slidable carriage 13 actuated by an hydraulic ram 14. In operation, one end of a cylindrical coil of flat aluminium strip wrapped in insulating paper is engaged in slots 21 in the fingers 12 and the fingers 15 are lowered into engagement with the other end of the coil. Thus the coil is supported at two diametrically opposite points by the fingers 12 and is urged downwardly at a further two diametrically opposite points spaced from the first said points by 90 degrees by the fingers 15. Further movements of the carriage 13 downwardly bends the coil 16 to form the winding shown in Fig. 9. As the coil bends the fingers are moved towards each other against the spring action and at the lower limits of the carriage 13 the four fingers lock together to constitute a solid cylindrical bar and a micro-switch actuates the sizing sleeve 22 which also engages an extractor catch on the fingers 15 to secure the winding to the fingers. The carriage 13 with the fingers 15 is returned to the upper position whereupon a shoot 25 is positioned to receive the formed winding as it is released and stripped from the fingers 15. Finally the winding 36 is bound with tapes 37 and provided at its ends with screw-threaded portions 38 and a pair of brushes 39 with leads 41. It is then inserted into the yoke 42 of a dynamo electric machine (Fig. 10). Coiling.-The blank coil may be of cylindrical, square or elliptical cross-section. In an embodiment a cylindrical coil is made from aluminium strip 51 by passing the strip through straightening rollers 52 and then to an insulating station 53 which supplies a paper strip 55 from a reel 56. Rollers 57, 58 bend the paper strip to U-shape enclosing the strip 51. A V-shaped slot in a plate 59 through which the strips pass bends the limbs of the paper strip into contact with the upper surface of the strip 51 and a strip 61 of adhesive tape from a reel 62 secures the strips together. The adhesive strip is pressed into place by rollers 63, 64. The covered strip passes to a winding station 66 (Fig. 14) comprising a former 67 mounted on a vertical spring-loaded shaft 69 driven by an electric motor through a two-speed gear arrangement. Cam discs 78, 79 control rotation of the former 67. Associated with the former is a layering roller 82 movable vertically on a pneumatically operated carriage 83 into engagements with a flange 68 on the former. The strip is clamped to the former by a finger 86 and when sufficient strip is wound on the former it is severed by a cutter blade 92 co-operating with an anvil 91 (Fig. 15). The wound coil is transferred to the forming station by a transfer mechanism comprising a vertically reciprocable and rotatable column 95 (Fig. 17) actuated by a piston 97 and gearing 96, 105. A plate 115 secured to the top of the column carries wedgeactuated clamps 118 for gripping the coil. Micro switches control the transfer mechanism in sequence with the strip coiling station and the winding forming station. The machine is provided with safety cut-outs in the event of failure of the gripping finger 86 or when the supply stations for the strips 51, 55, 61 are exhausted.
