Apparatus for expanding the time scale of signals, used in conjunction with a display system in echo sounding equipment, comprises a recording medium, e.g. a magnetic disc or tape, on which signals are recorded to be simultaneously read off by a reproducing head having a different velocity relative the recording medium to that of the record head. In an echo sounding apparatus, Fig. 4, the echo signals are recorded on a record medium B by a record head travelling in one direction at velocity V1 and reproduced by a replay head travelling in the opposite direction at a velocity V2. The reproduced signal, with its time scale inverted and expanded is displayed on a display tube K whose vertical scan is triggered by the "bottom" echo, e.g. d, so that the display gives an expanded version of echoes from near the bottom, e.g. from fish shoals f.
