4-chloro-ortho-cresol prepn - by iron pentacarbonyl-catalysed chlorination of ortho-cresol with sulphuryl chloride

Fe(CO)5 is catalyst in prepn. of 4-Cl-o-cresol by chlorination of o-cresol with SO2Cl2 at 10-70 degrees C (esp. 20-50 degrees C) pref. in at least 2 (esp. 3) step agitator vessel cascade, where 3rd step agitator vessel is heated to 80-130 degrees C. - Catalyst conc. is 0.2-1 (0.3-0.7) wt. % / wt. o-cresol. - Fe(CO)5 is liquid at room temp. and can be added continuously to process.
