Chelidonic and chelidamic acid - from diethyl xanthochelidonate - by thermal decomposition and autoclaving with ammonia

Chelidonic and chelidamic acid are prepd. in a continuous operation by decomposing diethyl xantho-chelidonate at 80-120 degrees, treating with HCl and ice-water and converting the chelidonic to chelidamic acid with conc. ammonia in an autoclave. This ensures higher yields and products of more standard quality than hitherto.
