Sloping keyways are formed in hardened rolls by a bar which is inserted in the roll and supported on height adjustable stands, the bar carrying grinding heads projecting from it, and being reciprocated. The heads are carried on spindles driven by a cable and pulley system housed inside the bar, and driven by a motor located outside one of the support stands.
