Fission product detection - using carrier gas to convey gaseous products to precipitator

System for the detection of fission products in liquid metal cooled or water cooled reactors utilises a carrier gas to convey gaseous fission products to a precipitator where a magnetic lens separates the decay products on to the end closure plate of the precipitator where an externally mounted detector measures the activity. The precipitator is designed to inhibit spurious magnetic fields which might arise from metal vapour drawn into the precipitator - or oxy/hydrogen gas explsion risk from water vapour. Is easily maintained since the magnet ring and detector are externally since the enhances the safety system of reactors in providing effective detection of fission products with consequent safeguarding of fuel element cladding.
